Lighting Design Awards

The Lighting Design Awards promote the importance and influence of good lighting, and commend energy efficiency and innovation in the design of the lit environment.

As the UK’s most prestigious national lighting competition, it offers all designers of lighting schemes the opportunity to attain the highest recognition for their skills, as well as rewarding innovations in lighting technology.

Who can enter the awards?

Everyone from architects and dedicated lighting designers to manufacturers and street lighting engineers are recognised in the awards.

What areas are covered by the awards?

There are eleven categories covering lighting schemes and three for innovations in lighting equipment. Previous scheme winners have included restaurants, theatres, marinas, churches and supermarkets while previous innovation winners have included streetlights, spotlights, lamps and ballasts. The categories available in 2008 can be found on the drop down menu on the left or at Entering the Awards, while more information on the entry criteria for each award can be viewed by clicking on the individual categories.

How are the awards judged?

The Lighting Design Awards are judged on a technical, conceptual and aesthetic assessment based on a written submission. Once the initial assessment has taken place the judges make a site visit to ascertain how the installation measures up to the source material. This is not a photographic competition.

Who organises the awards?

The Lighting Design Awards are organised by Lighting magazine and the Institution of Lighting Engineers with support from the Lighting Industry Federation.
