HOW Design Magazine

HowDesignFounded in 1985, HOW Magazine provides graphic-design professionals with essential business information, covers new technology and processes, profiles renowned and up-and-coming designers, details noteworthy projects, and provides creative inspiration. The year-end Business Annual has become a respected resource for its articles about studios across the U.S. In addition, HOW holds annual Self-Promotion, International and Interactive Design competitions and features the results in special issues. Other frequently profiled topics include digital design, creativity, typography and paper. The magazine is published in Cincinnati by F&W Publications.

Is your design organization seeking speakers and/or judges for upcoming programming or awards shows?

HOW’s art director and editors are available to participate in jury panels and present to design groups. In producing the magazine—and in running HOW’s design competitions—the HOW team sees thousands of design projects, tracks trends and understands what makes for effective design—and they’re interested in sharing what they’ve learned with your audience.

Speaking
All of the HOW team has experience speaking to a large group (in addition to presentations at the HOW Design Conference, all have spoken to local design groups and to students). Potential topics:

• Building Buzz: How design firms and freelancers can build public-relations exposure, with tips on pitching a story to the design press and advice for entering and winning design competitions.

• Design Gallery: A slideshow of HOW Self-Promotion Competition winners with commentary on design trends, self-promotion strategies and advice on boosting your chances in a design show

• Words + Pictures: A behind-the-scenes case study on the making of a magazine, with a focus on how word people and visual people can collaborate to create the best possible work

Judging
The HOW team can bring an interesting perspective to competition judging. All have experience reviewing, critiquing and choosing design work for publication in the magazine and for HOW’s design competitions. HOW’s art director, Tricia Barlow, is an accomplished designer in her own right; the HOW editors, while not practicing professionals, evaluate projects with design-savvy eyes, from the viewpoint of the client or customer.
